Team Racing Exercises

This page will describe a number of exercises that you can either perform on your own, with a partner or with 3+ boats.  Most of these exercises you can run on your own to improve your boat handling and tactics for team racing.

1. Upwind covering...Start from a follow my leader position...The leeward/behind boat must break cover from the lead boat.  The lead boat MUST tack every time the follower does.  As soon as the follower becomes the leader, continue with the exercise just swap roles.

2. Downwind covering...Start from a follow my leader position on a reach and then bear away around a mark to a run...The leeward/behind boat must break cover from the lead boat.  The lead boat MUST gybe every time the follower does.  As soon as the follower becomes the leader, continue with the exercise just swap roles.  Remember if you overlap from astern then rule 17 is on - sail your proper course but windward must keep clear.  If you have an overlap from a gybe then there is no proper course, rule 17 is off, luff as high as you like.  If the overlap gets broken then rule 17 is switched back on and you must resume proper course to the mark. If you are the lead boat, don't let the follower take your wind.

3. Holding - can you stop and hold position next to a mark, or at the 2 boat length zone? Can you accelerate to full speed as another boat approaches?

4. Downwind boat speed - how slow can you go?

5. Downwind mark block - can you stop a following boat from reaching the downwind mark?
